Frozen Echoes

Project for the Cultural Heritage Education Lab course, developed with Federica Rezzonico and Valentina Troncanetti: a video mapping conceived to pay homage to a historic building in Rome. We chose Sapienza University's campus in Flaminio, once Peroni's ice factory, today home to the Design and Architecture faculty.

A little over a minute long: it opens with Sapienza banners sliding down over the windows and then exiting the scene, making way for the progressive drawing of the entire façade. The drawn elements come alive and flash to the rhythm of the music; on the adjacent building, today a restaurant but once the ice factory's sales point, the elements turn into a restaurant table, tying the concept back to the theme of ice.

At the heart of the project is a crossed transformation of water: one building fills up and freezes while the other, already frozen, melts, until the ice cracks and everything drains away. As the building floods, the soundtrack becomes muffled, as if heard underwater.

I worked on the concept together with the group and handled the technical execution of the video mapping (animation and editing). For the exam, a scale model of the façade was built out of foam board panels, onto which the video was actually projected.
